IMT
grew from a chance meeting between two old friends; each with a very
different backgrounds to the other. Charles McDonald, a broadacre
farmer with a range of agribusiness interests and Reg Court, an
exploration industry technologist, met up after a severe rainfall event
had caused serious failures in water management systems around Bauhinia
Downs in Central Queensland.
In the course of the meeting and a subsequent evaluation of damage,
Charles expressed his frustration at being unable to access affordable
technology solutions that would allow him to make informed resource
management decisions. Reg felt he could solve some of Charles's
problems by modifying technologies he was using in exploration and
transfer them to Agriculture.
The outcome of this meeting was a series of trial surveys using a range
of different technologies over an 18 month period on "Cowandilla", a
7,000 acre broadacre farm near Moura in Central Queensland. The initial
aim of these surveys was to demonstrate the technologies in a farming
context and subsequently develop processes to minimise cost. Trial work
was monitored by the Queensland Department Of Natural Resources,
leading regional agronomists and local growers, all of whom encouraged
Charles and Reg to commercialise the various processes they had trialed.
IMT was incorporated and commenced operations in September 1999.
In December 1999, the Company recognised that the specialised GPS
surveying system purpose built for its mapping and tramlining work had
the potential to form the GPS "engine" for an advanced machinery
control system. Reg and Charles developed an alliance with SatFarm Pty
Ltd to test their concepts and to later develop such a system. SatFarm
has now largely completed development, a prototype is operational and
commercial release of products is planned for late 2001. The system has
a range of fundamentally new features and attributes that link with IMT
mapping and remote sensing products.
An alliance with Rural Property Design (RPD) was developed in May 2000
to deliver farm planning services based around IMT mapping and remote
sensing products.
Since incorporation of IMT, the Company has worked closely with
Exploration & Geospectral Services Pty Ltd (EGSS) to develop a
range of remotely sensed products for natural resource management, crop
management and specialised decision making support for agri-commodity
marketing. It is anticipated IMT & EGSS will jointly form a
specialised agriculture focussed remote sensing business later this
year after completion of several large scale trial surveys.
The products and services of IMT and its associates are currently
delivered through IMT. IMT is developing a series of agency
arrangements with major rural businesses that will provide direct
grower contact and product outlets in some 56 towns throughout Eastern
Australia.
As agency arrangements are put in place, IMT will commence operating
specialised workshops for agronomists, growers and Landcare Groups. IMT
and associated Companies are continuing to develop and expand their
range of services and products through ongoing Research and
Development, on farm trials and feedback from both growers and
agronomists.
